Today is a day of celebration and joy, and an opportunity to reflect on the Quranic narrative of this sacred event, a narrative that contains profound layers of meaning. In Surah Maryam (verses 22–26), God recounts:
“And she [Mary] carried him [Jesus] to term, then withdrew with him to a remote place. The pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm tree. She said, ‘Oh, I wish I had died before this and was in oblivion, forgotten.’ But a voice called to her from below, ‘Do not grieve; your Lord has provided a stream beneath you. And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates. So eat and drink and be contented. And if you see any human, say, “Indeed, I have vowed to the Most Merciful a fast [of silence], so I will not speak today to any human.”
Later, the infant in the cradle speaks, proclaiming himself a prophet of God.
Ibn Arabi, the great Islamic mystic, sees in these verses deep symbols that go beyond the historical surface of the story:
- The Palm Tree: The Apparently Barren Nature
The palm tree in that season seemed leafless and dry. This symbolizes the “material world” and “sensible nature,” which at first glance appears empty of spiritual life and divine grace. Sometimes our own lives and faith also seem dry and fruitless like that tree.- Shaking the Tree: Conscious Action and Human Will
The divine command to Mary was to shake the tree herself. This is the cipher of human effort and striving on the path of life. Divine grace is not unconditional; it is conditional upon our “movement” and “will.” Sometimes we must shake the trunk of our own being or the world around us so that hidden blessings may become manifest.- Fresh Dates: Grace that Springs from Matter
From the dry tree, fresh, sweet dates fell. This shows that life and spirituality well up from within the very apparent matter. In the mystical view, the earthly world is a mirror in which the beauty of the Truth is reflected; one must have the eye to see it.- The Fast of Silence: Severing Attachment to Creation and Connecting with the Creator
After receiving nourishment, Mary refrains from speaking to people. This “fast” (ṣawm), in Ibn Arabi’s interpretation, alludes to cutting ties with the world of dispersion and turning toward the unity of the Truth. Sometimes we must be silent to hear the call from the unseen.- Speaking from the Cradle: The Manifestation of Wisdom from Apparent Weakness
An infant speaking from the cradle symbolizes divine wisdom appearing from where it is least expected. This miracle shows that God’s power is not bound by the apparent laws of nature.A Trans‑Religious Message for Today’s Humanity
The story of Mary and Jesus is not merely a historical account; it is a parable of the soul’s journey:
- Everyone in life reaches a “dry palm tree” (loneliness, despair, meaninglessness).
- A voice from within says, “Do not grieve,” and “give your life a shake.”
- With that conscious movement, “fresh dates” of meaning and blessing rain down.
- Then comes a time of silence and contemplation to hear the inner message.
Today, when the world faces much violence and fragmentation, this story reminds us that peace and mercy spring from places that may at first seem barren, from dialogue, mutual understanding, and from shaking the apparently fruitless trees of human relationships.
🎇 May this birth be, for all people of every faith and tradition, a day of “shaking the dry tree” and “receiving the fresh dates of hope.”
Blessed be the birth of Jesus, the Word of God.
